    BSI

BSI stands for Basic Skills Instruction. BSI is not a special education accommodation, nor is it necessarily a pathway to classification. It is, however, one means of supporting K-3 students who are momentarily struggling with concepts in phonics, reading comprehension, writing, or math. BSI is also embedded in our Intervention & Referral Services process. (This process gives general education teachers access to a multi-disciplinary team that provides strategies for struggling learners after strategies tried by the classroom teacher have not yielded the desired results in a students' learning. Having a student partake in any of the various tiers of our BSI program is one of the strategies sometimes used.)

Haworth School's K-3 BSI program provides the following for students struggling in phonics, reading comprehension, writing, and/or math:
    • Temporary and flexible pull-out support
    • Focused, explicit instruction by a faculty member with background in the area of support
    • One-to-one or small group setting
    • Alternative/differentiated means of access to skills and content

There are three tiers to the BSI program; the higher the tier, the greater and more frequent the support. For more information or questions about the BSI program, please email Carrieann Malanga-DeVito, Supervisor of Special Education (malangac@nvnet.org).
