Horse Stories

Ryan, Pam Munoz Paint the Wind
This book is told in chapters alternating between a wild mare birthing a foal in Wyoming and an eleven-year-old orphan living in Altadena, California with her elderly and overly strict grandmother. Maya is a manipulative liar, constantly trying to assert some will against her grandmother and a series of housekeepers. Once her grandmother dies, she learns she is to be shipped off to her mother's relatives in Wyoming, where she should have been spending summers according to her parents' will. Once there, she learns more about her mother and father and learns to ride horses in the mountains of Wyoming and we learn the connection between Maya and Artimesia the wild mare.

This is a pleasant horse story. Fans of horse stories or of the author will swallow this one without many questions. There are tons of holes in the plot, cliches and cliched characters. I listened to the audio book and I found the narrator's voice for Maya especially irritating. Still, it's nice to have a new horse story.
