Storytelling:

Julie Della Torre, master storyteller, is Haworth School's Storyteller-in-residence. Each year she visits students in kindergarten through grade four once a week for about six weeks to tell stories. Students listen intently and look forward to hearing the stories Mrs. Della Torre tells.

Mrs. Della Torre proves again and again that in this fast-paced media-driven world in which we live, there is still room for the quiet, unadorned spoken story which engages young imaginations.

Haworth Home and School Association has funded Mrs. Della Torre's program since Mrs. Carol Taylor, kindergarten teacher (now retired) and amatuer storyteller herself, suggested the program. In the 2005-06 school year, HHSA added a new dimension to the program by having Mrs. DellaTorre come and teach fifth graders how to become storytellers.

While most students in grade five are terror-stricken at the thought of telling stories, Mrs. Della Torre calms their fears and walks them through the steps of choosing a story and memorizing and telling it. Once the fifth grader learns a story, he or she then tells it to a class of students in kindergarten or first grade.
