Hello to all. Spring has nearly sprung!!!  Hooray!

The Garden Club has begun its 3rd year at HPS. We have grown from 19 to nearly 40 members. We have been quite busy making recycling posters to help educate everyone about how it should be done properly. We have labeled the GIANT YELLOW pails for PAPER ONLY (of any kind) & the ROUND BLUE pails with the WHITE lids for PLASTIC BOTTLES and aluminum cans. We will keep trying until we reach EVERYONE!!!

Our lunchtime composting program has restarted during the first half of lunch thanks to our GREEN THUMBS UP club. (Credit for the great name goes to EmmaViggiano.) We are eager to begin “feeding” our pink Roly-Poly Pig composter, yet to be named, and put it outdoors for all to see. We now have WORMS making soil for us indoors, so now have to feed them along with the fish, the birds and the pig.

We have created educational posters to let others know exactly what CAN and CANNOT go into the compost containers. In February, we received our pound of worms. They are in a separate indoor composter and taken care of by the Garden Club members. Our group is very proud of being able to spread the word and try to encourage others to join in our efforts.

The 2nd grade classes have truly joined the program full force and now have Recycle Doctors in their classroom. They bring the paper and plastic to their respective containers in the hallway. It would be wonderful to see others start to do the same, making this a classroom job for our responsible and interested students.

In 3rd grade we must thank Ava Rotunde for taking the initiative to start a collection of plastic bottle caps. The hard caps that don’t bend are made of a different type of plastic than the bottles and need to be separated.

We look forward to getting outside and getting our hands dirty as we begin to prep our gardens for Spring planting.

We’ll see you outside,
